How to Create a Catchy Title


Before publishing a book, there needs to be a strong title to entice a reader into knowing more. Grabbing a reader’s attention is what will bring them into seeing what your book is about and potentially buying it. With a strong title, the reader will be captivated by learning more about it.

The title of a book sets up what the book will be about. A reader only knows as much as the title is letting on, so you need to grab them and keep them with a catchy title.

One of the most essential elements of a book is a strong title. It is like a newspaper headline: If prospective readers are intrigued, they keep reading. If they don’t, they move on to the next book or blog post.

Reader first look at the book’s:

  • Title
  • Cover
  • Back cover
  • Table of contents
  • First few paragraphs of the book’s content
  • And then the price

Your title should do at least one of the following: create intrigue, identify a need, make a promise, or simply state the content.

Your title should set the expectation of the reader as to what to expect when they finish reading your book.

Keep in mind that most people base almost every buying decision on one of two things and they are: To Achieve Pleasure or To Avoid Pain.  If your title shows them how they can achieve some type of pleasurable experience by reading your book or they can avoid suffering a painful mistake by buying your book then you are well on your way to writing a book that will sell

One of the best ways to choose a clever title is to consider an important object, character, or idea from the book and focus on that.

If your book is non-fiction, consider a subtitle to clarify your clever main title. Readers of non-fiction want to know up-front what they’re going to get from your book.

Make sure your title is original. Do a quick search on Amazon or Google to make sure there’s not a book with your title, or a very similar title with your subject matter.

Finally, once you’ve come up with the perfect title, think of two or three more. Run them all by your writers’ group or your most honest friends or family to see what they think.

The title is what your readers acknowledge first. It has to foreshadow the topic while being intriguing enough that they want to continue and read the whole book. Before publishing, check-in with the title and see if the title and the book fit together. With these tips, you will have no issues with creating a catchy title for your book that the readers will love.
